I truly believe everyone deserves to live in a space that brings them joy and my list of shopping for home decor tips will be sure to help you create a space of your dreams (a.k.a your Pinterest board).
My Sister-In-Law, Amber, and her family just moved into their brand new beautiful home and I am absolutely in love! It’s an open modern farmhouse style home and it’s absolutely stunning. She asked me if I would go shopping for home decor with her and we’ve been planning our shopping day before they even broke ground.
We had a great time strolling through our favorite home decor stores, handpicking pieces for her space, while sipping iced coffees. It was a successful day and I want to share my shopping for home decor tips with you.
This post is all about my 7 tried and true tips to use when shopping for home decor.

Best Shopping for Home Decor Tips
1. Pick your Targeted Areas that you Want Decorated First
Even for someone who loves decorating as much as I do, decorating an entire house is a daunting and expensive task! So, stick with one room at a time. There is simply no way to simultaneously decorate every room in your house at once. You do not want to overwhelm yourself!
Amber and I technically focused on more than one room at a time, but we kept it to 4 smaller zones. We decided to focus on table décor for her dinning table, coffee table, TV stand, and entry table. If this list sounds like too much for you, then make it smaller. The point is to stay focused, what you focus on is up to you.
2. What should I decorate first?
Where you start is up to you, but I have a few tips. I would suggest starting with an easy room, or a room that your family uses the most. You may want to also consider where your guests will gather if you enjoy hosting. Amber decided to focus on completing their most used spaces on their main floor first. Smart girl! 😉
3. Decorate with what you have – Shop your home
Before you head to the store, take a stroll around the house to shop your own collection. Do you have something stored in your basement that would work in the space? Or maybe there is a piece of furniture you have in the guest bedroom, that could be more useful in another space. Get creative with this step. Don’t be afraid to reupholster something or slap a coat of paint on it.
Before our scheduled shopping trip, Amber and I spent some time trying to use what she already had. This allowed us to play with heights which saved us time and money in the long run. Aside from a few smaller details, she had the top of her entry table complete before we began our shopping journey.
4. Take Photos of your Targeted areas
I made sure to snap photos of each zone we were wanting to decorate. It’s surprisingly easy to forget what things look like when you go in to the store. We pulled the photos up several times to see if certain items would work or not. For instance, we forgot about Amber’s large plant that sits next to her TV stand when trying to decide how to decorate it. We almost brought home more plants for that spot which would have been too much for that space.
5. Measure your Space
Measure everything before you go on your shopping trip and bring your tape measure with you. This saved us on so many almost purchased items! For instance, she had a temporary centerpiece on her dining table that was about 2 feet long. Even though she wasn’t in love with the centerpiece, we both agreed that it was covering the perfect amount of space for her 8 foot long farmhouse table. So, we knew we wanted to stick to something similar in size.
6. Pinterest like it’s your job! – Scroll baby scroll!
Now that you know what to focus on, you can spend some time scrolling Pinterest. Start a new board and go to town. Pin like crazy! Once you have pinned until your heart’s content, take a look at your board. Is there a theme? Similarities? Do you gravitate towards neutral décor, farmhouse, or something really modern? There are no rules when it comes to how YOU should decorate YOUR home. You want YOUR space to bring you joy. However, it is helpful to have a style or vibe when shopping for new items. While you are scrolling, check out my pinterest page.
Since Amber and I were focusing on table decor, I spent some time searching for “modern farmhouse table decor”, “farmhouse vignettes” and “modern farmhouse decor”. When I saw something I thought Amber would like, I added it to my shopping list. For instance, when I saw a cool dough bowl centerpiece, I added dough bowl to our dining table list.
7. Make a List.. finally!
If you think you will remember everything you pinned or talked about, you are wrong. Make a wish list in your phone to help you stay focused. Yes, you can revisit your Pinterest app while shopping, but a list will save you more time. I don’t know how many times Amber and I had to stop and refocus by checking our list again and again… and again! Home decor stores are packed with all kinds of things for you to look at and it can be easy to get distracted and even over stimulated.
