Looking for living room wall decor ideas diy? Learn how we turned a dry erase board into custom frame for a large blank wall.

When you have a large, blank wall staring you down every day, it can feel overwhelming to decorate. Especially in your living room, where guests gather and your family spends so much time, that big space above the couch becomes a focal point whether you want it to or not. I’ve faced this same design dilemma more than once. But instead of dropping hundreds (or thousands) on oversized artwork, I found a budget-friendly project that not only fills the space beautifully but tells a personal story too.
Let me show you how I turned an inexpensive dry erase board from Hobby Lobby into a custom, swappable photo display. It’s one of my favorite DIY wall art projects yet, a creative idea that adds visual interest without spending a lot of money. Whether you’re in a small space or decorating a larger living room, this idea can flex with your style and budget.
This post is all about living room wall decor ideas DIY!
From Wedding Prints to Family Moments

Before this project, I had our wedding photos displayed above the couch. Check out this post to see how we made these $2 DIY poster hangers. I had printed them at Walgreens, and they lived in that space for years. While I still love them, and I could have easily swapped out the poster prints, I felt pulled to relocate them and free up the living room wall for something that involved our boys.
I wanted a place to display candid family photos: silly smiles, muddy boots, first birthdays, rainy-day dance parties. These everyday moments from my camera roll deserved their own spotlight. I just didn’t know how to do it affordably… yet.
Sophia Lee-Inspired But Budget-Minded

If you follow Sophia Lee, you may have seen her stunning wedding photo display. She used a custom frame to mount individual photo strips into what looks like an oversized piece of artwork. It’s clean, classic, and high-end and a perfect example of large-scale art with personal meaning.
I loved the concept but couldn’t justify the price of a custom frame. Especially since the wall behind our couch is probably the longest wall in our entire home. To make sense visually, any decor would need to span a good chunk of it. Breaking the space up into smaller pieces felt repetitive since I’d already done that on other living room walls.
Finally I found an extra large magnetic dry erase board on sale for just $25. It had a natural wood frame that already felt like a decorative element. If it didn’t work above the couch, I figured I’d repurpose it in the home office or playroom. But spoiler alert.. it worked perfectly.
The Step-by-Step Process

1. Sourcing the Board: The board was originally priced around $100 but marked way down during a sale. Hobby Lobby often rotates discounts on home decor, so keep an eye out if you want something similar. Look for boards with wood or black trim for a more intentional look and bonus points if they already match your living room space.
Before purchasing, measure your wall space carefully. If your wall is especially wide, like mine, you want to be sure the board won’t look too small. You can always style around it with accessories if needed, but starting with the right dimensions makes a big difference. Consider the furniture below as well. A board that extends around two-thirds the length of your couch will look most balanced.
2. Designing the Photo Grid: I opened Canva and created a custom design using the dimensions Walgreens requires for poster prints. I chose the print size I wanted and left white space around the edges of the board for a matted effect. Using square frames, I arranged my favorite photos into a tight grid. You could play with different sizes or shapes depending on your style. Just keep consistent spacing for that clean, modern appeal.
If this is your first time building a collage, start with 8-10 rows and columns and adjust as needed. Canva Pro users can use the grid tool, but even on the free version, you can drag and align photo placeholders manually. I saved my file as a high-resolution JPEG to preserve print quality.
You could also theme your grid. One year might focus on vacations, another on everyday memories. Including variety adds visual interest and makes the collage feel more intentional.
3. Printing on a Budget: Walgreens offers poster printing and almost always has a coupon code available. I got mine for just $15 using a simple online code. This is a great way to support your local print shop while staying on a tight budget.
You can upload your design online and choose in-store pickup or shipping. I prefer same-day pickup because I can quickly see the colors in person. If the tones look off, a quick re-edit in Canva (like adjusting saturation or contrast) can make a huge difference before reprinting.
Consider printing on matte paper to reduce glare and add a more professional finish. If you’re printing elsewhere, be sure they accept custom sizes like 24×30.
4. Mounting the Print: I first attached the poster using Command poster strips, but you could also use magnetic tape or even clear photo corners for a subtle look. I plan to try sticky magnet strips next time so the print lays closer to the board. That seamless feel adds to the visual appeal and helps disguise the fact that it’s not a traditional frame.
Lay your board flat when applying your print. Start by placing the top corners, then slowly smooth it downward to avoid bubbles or creases. Use a ruler or credit card to flatten if needed. If using magnets, go for small, strong ones and tuck them behind the print corners for a hidden hold.
Pro tip: If your board is magnetic, you can layer other decorative pieces over the top too. Consider adding a magnetic date label or quote strip at the bottom to change with the seasons.
5. Updating It Yearly: My plan is to change the collage each year after our youngest’s birthday. The current display features photos from the month he was born and a snapshot of our life at that time. Updating it annually adds freshness and reflects how our family grows and changes. It becomes a living part of the room, not just static wall art.
You could even turn this into a yearly tradition and set a reminder on your calendar to create the new print each year. Use it as a chance to reflect, reset, and refresh your space. If your kids are older, they could help choose their favorite memories for the next round.
As an added touch, store the old prints in a portfolio or roll them into tubes to revisit later. It’s like a visual yearbook and only prettier and always on display.
Why This Works in a Living Room

In any living room, walls often compete with large windows, entertainment centers, or open shelves. Finding wall decor that adds warmth without clutter can be a challenge. This project is an excellent way to add a personal touch without sacrificing style.
It gives the illusion of large-scale art but costs a fraction of what most oversized pieces go for. And because it reflects your real life, it brings meaning to your living space. Interior designers often recommend layering different elements—texture, color, and form to create depth. This kind of photo display hits all three.
Plus, if you’re decorating on a budget, using a dry erase board as your base is a great idea. You can find them in thrift stores, office supply shops, or even repurpose one from your home office. Pair it with a poster print, and you’ve got yourself a gallery wall centerpiece for under $40.
Styling Around the Frame
Because the board is slightly smaller than I would have liked for the entire wall, I styled out the sides with a few accents. Open shelves, wall-mounted planters, or sconces could all work here. Picture lights are another great way to elevate a large wall piece and add drama to white walls.
Consider bringing in visual interest with:
- Plant walls or hanging greenery
- Framed family portraits in different sizes
- Abstract art made with acrylic paint
- Your own abstract painting on canvas
- Decorative wall hangings from thrift stores
- DIY art made from blank canvases and dark blues or fun color pops
This approach blends well into almost any interior style. Whether your living area leans minimalist, modern farmhouse, or traditional, the natural frame and photo grid serve as a neutral centerpiece.
Share your Living Room Wall Decor Ideas DIY

The most important thing to remember when tackling wall space is this: your home should reflect you. Not trends, not Pinterest-perfect corners but real memories, meaningful touches, and creative ideas that make your space feel like yours.
Whether you’re filling blank space, solving a design dilemma, or just looking for a new way to enjoy your favorite photos, this dry erase board hack is a good idea. It’s an easy way to make a dramatic effect without committing to permanent architectural details or spending a lot of money.
With a bit of white paint on the walls and your personal style front and center, you can create a space that feels fresh, intentional, and full of life. This project proves you don’t need to be an interior designer to make bold, budget-friendly design choices that truly transform your room feel.
So if you’re staring at large empty walls and need inspiration, try this. It’s one of the best tips I can offer for anyone who wants a personalized, inexpensive way to decorate their living room wall.
