Every year, my Mom whips up a batch of these salt dough ornaments for one of our Christmas crafts (yes, of course, my family does Christmas crafts) and we have so much fun decorating them. It’s a cheap, easy, and fun way to fill up your tree while creating memories with your family. These ornaments require THREE ingredients: flour, salt, and water! That’s it! Let’s get started!
Ingredients and Materials for Salt Dough Ornaments

- 4 C of all-purpose flour
- 1 C of Salt
- 1 1/2 C of warm water
- Cookie cutters, paint, glitter, twine, stamps, etc. for decorating
Instructions for Salt Dough Ornaments
Step 1: Making the Dough

- Preheat oven to 300° F
- Combine flour & salt
- Add warm water while stirring continuously
- Knead the dough with hands until smooth and moldable
- The salt will dry your hands out, so you may consider rubber gloves
- Roll it out until it’s about 1/8″ thick
Step 2: Making the Ornaments

- Use cookie cutters to cut dough into festive shapes
- Create a hole in each shape using a straw
- Transfer to a baking sheet
- Bake ornaments for an hour
- Let ornaments completely cool
Step3: Decorating the Salt Dough Ornaments

- Decorate your ornaments with paint, glitter, markers or anything else you have laying around
- Decorating tips and tricks:
- Layer your colors
- I painted the backgrounds of all my ornaments first (see pic above), let them dry, and then added the extra detail
- Use a toothpick or the end of your paintbrush
- If your brush isn’t small enough, a toothpick or the back of your brush is a great way to add tiny details to your ornaments
- Add ribbon or twine so you can hang your beautiful ornaments on the tree
- Layer your colors
- Don’t forget to sign and date your ornaments!
- Spray the ornaments with a clear coat to help preserve them
