How to Organize a Small Closet with a Lot of Stuff
1. Step 1 of how to organize a small closet — Get Rid of Some of your Stuff
I say this with no judgement, because I know I could probably fill a trash bag or two full of clothes I haven’t worn in a few years, but it’s time to get rid of some of that stuff. You are more likely to wear what you have in your closet when it’s not so jammed pack.
If you’re like me and have a hard time getting rid of stuff, try my “maybe” method. Start by grabbing a stack of clothing to go through and make a “yes” and a “maybe” pile because a “no” pile is too permanent for me and I have a hard time deciding quickly. I know, ridiculous. I have attachment issues apparently. The maybe pile might be gone through one more time, but I usually toss it in a trash bag once I go through my entire closet.
The maybe pile tricks your brain into thinking it’s not permanent, but then you see how much better your closet looks with less stuff and you end up donating all of your maybes.
1.5 Consider this Permission to Just Donate your Junk and not Waste time Selling
Unless you have lots of designer items to get rid of, just take your stuff to the donation bins closest to your house. Or GoodWill is super convenient too. Consider this your “permission” to do so. Sure, you can take your stuff to a consignment shop and make a few bucks, but that requires more time and energy that you just may never get around to. So, to avoid trash bags of clothes rolling around in your trunk for months, just make it easy on yourself and take to a bin or Goodwill. It’s exhilarating to do so!
2. Use Matching or Coordinating Hangers
Okay, this may sound silly to you, because it did to me. I used to make fun of my sis-in-law for using matching hangers until I decided to convert over to all white hangers when staging our home to sell a few years back. Our closets are small walk-ins so the doors are usually open and it makes the space look so much nicer! Especially since I have so many clothes shoved in there. Sure, you can take it a step further and invest in the nice velvet or wooden hangers, but I kept it simple by sticking to one color instead. Most of our hangers were white to begin with, so that’s the color I stuck with. I removed all the other colors and traded them with the white ones my Mom had. You can find white or black hangers anywhere which made the transition even easier.
3. Cover those Pesky Wire Shelves
Have you seen my amazing wire shelving hack yet?! It costs me less than $10 to convert a closet and the results are amazing! It’s safe to say that I’m not the biggest fan of this builder-grade shelving solution. Not only is wire shelving ugly but the large gaps between the wires make them impractical too. Stuff can fall through the gaps so easily! So, if you don’t have time or the budget to replace your wire shelving, may I suggest my foam board solution? All you need is a few sheets of foam board and a roll of pretty contact paper! It makes a huge difference and super easy to do! When things look nicer, we tend to keep them organized!
4. Color Coordinate your Clothing
When staging our first home, I decided to color coordinate our closets in hopes to make our sweet little home stand out from others (pssst I know the buyer noticed because she specifically mentioned it in a letter to us). I originally did it for aesthetic purposes only, but then found that I really like this organization technique. Clothing items tend to be less hidden and it’s still easy to put laundry away. I used to organize my clothing by type, but would get lazy when putting laundry away and the organization would be ruined. Give this technique a try and see what you think!
5. Flip Your Hangers When you Switch your Wardrobe
You’ve probably heard of this tip before, but I am a big fan. Mainly because I am terrible at getting rid of clothes. Our closets are probably average in size, but this girl has too many clothes! So, I have to switch out my wardrobe seasonally. When I do, I make sure to place all the hangers in the closet backwards, and once I wear a piece of clothing I place the hanger back the right way (this happens without really thinking about it). When I go to switch out my sweaters for tanks, I consider donating the items that never got “flipped” or worn.
6. Shoe Racks are Your Friends – These Two are My Favorite
I know I should really get rid of some of my shoes, but I just don’t have the heart to do so. Instead, I just keep buying shoe racks. My shoes racks are a great way to utilize the vertical space in my closet that would normally not get used. I use one of these on the floor and several of these on top of the wire shelving. I then switch out my shoes seasonally since I still don’t have enough space for all my shoes.
7. Add an Extra Clothing Hanging Rod without Tools
Need more space like me? Add an additional hanging rod without having to use a single tool. I have a similar rod like the one above and allows me to store all my jackets with the rest of my clothes. Before, I was using a spare closet and I didn’t feel like I wore them enough. This bar not only increased space in my closet, but also the use of my clothes too!
