Learn why Double Stuffing balloons is so useful when it comes to designing your own balloon garlands and custom balloon decorations.
I came across the “double stuffing” method when I was searching for a specific dusty blue color for my son’s first birthday balloon garland. I found the perfect dusty blue balloon kit on Etsy, but the seller wanted over $80 for a tiny “custom” balloon kit. I was appalled by the price but then read that the balloons come double stuffed. That’s when I had the “ah-ha” moment and realized I could make ANY color balloon I wanted!
This post is all about how to customize balloon colors by Double Stuffing Balloons!!

What does Double Stuffing Balloons Mean? What is the Point of Double Stuffing Balloons?
Double stuffing balloons means exactly what it sounds like it means, it’s when one balloon is stuffed into another before inflating them.
But, why??
There’s actually a few benefits to this. Double stuffing balloons allows the balloon artist to customize colors while improving the look and quality of their balloon garlands.
Create Custom Balloon Colors by Layering
To create custom unique balloon colors you will want to double stuff your balloons. This is actually a designer trick. Think of it like mixing two colors in a paint palette. For instance, to get a more muted or softer pastel green, layer a white balloon over a green one. A white balloon over a gold balloon makes the most beautiful tan/beige color that is perfect for showers. Experiment with different balloon color combinations to create balloons off the market! There are several double stuffing balloon charts out there — just search for them on Pinterest or Google.
Improving the look of the Balloon by Layering – It Removes the Balloon Nipple
Layering balloons removes the balloon nipple. If you’ve ever put together a garland with tan or brown balloons and thought they looked like they belonged at a bachelorette party, then you know what I mean. They can look like boobs. Double stuffing balloons will remove the nipple or point from the balloon.
How do you Make Double Stuffed Balloons
To make a double stuffed balloon, grab a straw, pen or screwdriver (anything long and skinny) and insert it into your bottom layer balloon and repeat this step with the outer layer balloon. Then blow it up using your electric air pump and you will have yourself a custom balloon color.

Does Double Stuffing Balloons Make Them Last Longer?
According to a few balloon garland designers I follow like, Decor Lab, they do! Double stuffed balloons don’t oxidize as fast as regular balloons. I have not done a side-by-side test on this yet, but I trust the experts.
How to Inflate a Double Stuffed Balloon?
My trusty ol electric pump will inflate any size double stuffed besides the 5 inch balloons. You will want a manual hand pump for the 5 inch balloons. When using the electric pump, I’ve noticed the larger it is, the easier it is to inflate.
How to Tie a Double Stuffed Balloon?
To tie a double stuffed balloon, you can either tie both balloons as if you are tying one, or only tie the inner balloon. Tying both creates pretty big knots which might make it difficult if you are working with a balloon strip.

Double Stuffing in Summary
Double stuffing balloons is a technique used by balloon artists to create more impressive balloon designs. It involves inserting one balloon inside another, inflating them both simultaneously, and then tying off the ends. The result is a balloon that is twice as thick as a regular one, with a unique color and greater durability.
While double stuffing balloons may require more time and effort than traditional balloon decorating methods, the result is often worth it in terms of the visual impact and durability of the design. If you’re looking to create a memorable and eye-catching balloon decoration, double stuffing is definitely worth considering!
