Discover cheap and easy farm themed birthday party ideas, including DIY birthday decor and fun activities for a memorable celebration!

A farm-themed birthday party is an ideal choice for any toddler. What toddler doesn’t love the outdoors, adorable farm animals, and tractors? It’s a theme that’s sure to be a hit! We chose this theme for our 2-year-old’s birthday and even combined it with a diaper party for our second little boy. It was the perfect fit for our homestead, and everyone had so much fun! In this post, we’ll cover everything from the DIY cupcake toppers to the impressive balloon display we had at our farm party. Let’s dive in so your little farmer can have a happy birthday too!
This post is all about farm themed birthday party!
1. Starting with the Invitation when Planning a Birthday Party

I always begin my party planning with the invitation, as it sets the tone for everything else. For Stetson’s second birthday and Coleson’s arrival, I created a custom invitation in Canva. Inspired by designs I saw online that led me to clever farm graphic design ideas, I made it my own by incorporating the party’s color palette. I used a mix of reds, blues, whites—and even added a dairy cow print to tie the farm-themed party together.
My fun tagline read: Oink, Quack, Moo — Coleson is almost due and Stetson is turning two!
This invitation not only set a playful tone for the first birthday party celebration but also inspired several party ideas that came later. We no longer mail out party invitations. Instead, we either text the digital version to our guests or create a Facebook event and share it on the page. We believe it’s totally fine to reserve formal mailed invitations for more formal occasions, like weddings.
2. DIY Birthday Balloon Display

For the main decor, I started with a large balloon backdrop featuring a mix of red, blue, light blue, and even cow print balloons to really set the tone for the farm-themed party. The balloon kit I ordered (click here for the Amazon link) came with not only cow balloons but also other cute farm animals, which I placed on the floor for the kids to enjoy and play with. I began by attaching the red barn backdrop to the wall and then set the round balloon arch in front of it. To complete the setup, I secured the balloon clusters to the arch using a combination of 260 balloons, zip ties, and mini clamps to keep everything in place.
We then placed our antique highchair in front of the balloon display and draped it with a DIY high chair banner to tie in all of the colors. See the next section for details on how to create this simple yet charming banner.

3. DIY High Chair Banner

For the high chair moment, I reused the diy high chair banner I made for Stetson’s First Rodeo Themed party (click here for all the rodeo theme details), and added green, white and red bandanas to tie in the farm theme.
4. Farm Theme Birthday Cake and DIY Cupcake Toppers

Our family friends made a beautiful smash cake for Stets as well as delicious cupcakes and mini cheesecake desserts, which we displayed on a custom cupcake stand my brother built for my wedding shower. Since then, we’ve used it for multiple events because it’s the perfect size for cupcakes and little desserts.
To decorate the stand:
- I cut a few handkerchiefs in half and layered them across each shelf, slightly shifting them to break up the white background.
- I created custom face cake toppers with straw hats (check out how you can make your own DIY face cupcake topper).
- We used farm-themed cupcake wrappers to further tie in the theme.
- We topped the the stand with a large “2” and a toy cow
5. Handkerchief Garlands

Again, I repurposed the handkerchief window garlands from Stetson’s previous rodeo-themed birthday party. I added green, white and red bandanas to tie in the theme. They gave a playful touch to the decor while continuing the farm theme throughout the space.
6. Photo Garlands

To further celebrate Stetson turning two, we hung photos of him and his favorite people all over our cabin. We used twine and clothespins create the photo garlands. Because we were in our cabin, I simply used thumbtacks to secure the twine. If you’re doing this at home, I recommend using small clear Command hooks to avoid damaging walls or attaching the twine to existing fixtures. This simple display filled the space beautifully while adding a personal and sentimental touch.
7. Unique Birthday Guest Book

A fun keepsake idea I borrowed from my sister-in-law is using a theme-related book as a guest book. We used a farm-themed book that my son already had. Guests signed the book, making it a special memento from the special day.
The cute little sign by the guestbook says “Wait! Stop and take a look, then write a message in my farm book. A birthday wish, or just sign your name, so that I will remember that you came. You can find a spot on any page, it’s something that I will treasure at every age.”
8. Seed Packets make the Perfect Farm Party Favors

For our party favors
, we didn’t want to send everyone home with a bag full of junk, but wanted to give them something to take home, and we decided that seed packets were the perfect solution
! We displayed them on the wall with clothespins and a sign saying “Thank you for Celebrating our Growing Family. Take a Packet of Seeds!”
9. Fun Outdoor Party Activities

Too keep the kids entertained, we set up outdoor party activities too:
- Our Bounce house — here’s a link — we decided to buy one instead of renting one every year
- Corn pool with cheap toy tractors we found at the Dollar Tree — the corn pool is a family favorite at outdoor events — basically a giant sensory bin like you would see at a pumpkin patch
- Outdoor kitchen (gift from his grandparents)
- Bags (cornhole) set borrowed from my work
- Outdoor roller coaster (Stetson’s bday gift from us)
- Giant Connect 4
10. Farm Themed Coloring Page

One of my favorite personal touches was creating custom farm themed coloring page with Stetson’s name on them! I designed these in Canva, and they were such a hit with the kids.
11. Make a Craft Cart for an Indoor Birthday Activity

At every party we throw, I like to have a kids’ crafting station. Since our space is limited in the cabin, I used a craft cart to organize the supplies.
Activities included:
- Cute farm animal sticker sheets from Amazon
- Farm-themed temporary tattoos
- Other farm-themed stickers
This was a great way to keep little ones entertained without taking up too much space!
12. Play Area for Toddlers and Babies

Inside the cabin, we set up a small play area for younger kids and babies:
- Placed an extra piece of loose carpet in this little nook in the cabin for a comfy play space
- Set up Stetson’s tent as a designated area for little ones to play
- This was especially helpful since we had a baby boom in our friend group!
13. Extra Balloon Garlands

We had leftover balloons, so I threw together extra balloon garlands for the cabin railing and loft area. They helped fill the space with more color.
