Before you even start inflating your first balloon, the big question on your mind is likely: How many balloons do I need for a balloon garland? The answer? It depends! The number of balloons you’ll need varies based on factors like how many different colors you’re using, the size of the balloons, how full you want your garland to look, and where you plan to display it. A large backdrop or arch will require significantly more balloons than a small garland draped above a cake table. The great thing about balloon garlands and balloon arches is that you can customize them to any size, but let’s break down how to ensure you have enough balloons for your design.
This post is all about How Many Balloons do I need to Make a Balloon Garland?
How many balloons do I need to make a balloon garland? The minimum..

The number of balloons you’ll need depends on your desired look, but as a general rule, you’ll want a minimum of 80 balloons for a standard garland display. However, the more balloons you use, the better!
For the best results, use a mix of sizes to add dimension to your garland. Here’s a good starting point for each color you’re using:
- 1-3 balloons in 18”
- 10-20 balloons in 10”-12” (these sizes look very similar)
- 10-15 balloons in 5”
If you have extra balloons, you can create a denser, more visually striking garland. The more, the merrier!
Balloon Sizes, Balloon Colors & Type of Balloons to Use

The size of balloons you choose plays a big role in the overall look of your balloon garland. Larger balloons (18″) add volume and create a dramatic effect, medium-sized balloons (12″) help form the main structure of the garland, and smaller balloons (5″) add detail and help fill in gaps for a polished, professional look.
When selecting balloon colors, aim for an odd number of colors—typically 3 to 5—so your color scheme looks visually balanced. Clusters of balloons in repeating patterns will create a cohesive and symmetrical design.
Mixing different types of balloons, such as latex balloons, confetti-filled balloons, or foil balloons, adds texture and dimension to your garland, making it more visually interesting and dynamic.
Types of Balloon Displays and How Many Balloons You’ll Need to Recreate:
First Rodeo Balloon Display on the Round Arch Stand

For Stetson’s 1st Rodeo birthday balloon display on the round arch stand, I used a total of around 130 balloons in different balloon colors and balloon sizes, creating a full and eye-catching setup. I incorporated four different colors and balanced the sizes to achieve a dynamic, professional look.
Number of balloons used for this stunning balloon garland
- 18-inch balloons (the larger balloons): 1 to 2 in each color
- 12-inch balloons: 10 to 15 in each color
- 5-inch balloons (the smaller balloons): Around 20 in each color
This display turned out quite large and looked incredibly full, making it the perfect statement piece for the party!

Moana Color Scheme on Arch Backdrop Frames

For this balloon garland display, we went with a Moana-inspired color scheme and actually purchased a Moana-inspired balloon kit from Amazon. We paired it with the arch backdrop frames I already had, covering them with white backdrop covers for a clean and polished look.

- This kit did not include any 18-inch balloons, which I think would have taken the display to the next level. However, even without them, it turned out absolutely stunning!
- 10 to 12-inch balloons: About 10 in each color
- 5-inch balloons: About 5 in each color
To assemble the garland, we inflated all the balloons and twisted them into quads, then connected them using two 260 balloons before clipping the clusters of balloons onto the frame. The result was a vibrant and full setup that perfectly captured the tropical Moana theme!

4ft – 6ft Bridal Rose Gold Baby Shower Balloon Garland attached to wall

This balloon garland was created specifically for my balloon garland tutorial blog post, featuring a Bridal or Baby Shower-inspired color scheme of rose gold, white, and clear. Even though it’s a relatively simple design, it still looks full and elegant, making it a perfect choice for a chic celebration.
Number of balloons used for this stunning balloon garland
- Three 18-inch balloons
- About 12 12-inch balloons
- 11 5-inch balloons
Despite its smaller size, this garland still has a full and polished look, demonstrating that you don’t need hundreds of balloons to create a beautiful display!

Champagne Popping Garland attached to wall

For the champagne popping balloon garland, I used a champagne bottle balloon as the base to create a fun and celebratory effect. To build the cascading “bubbles,” I filled a balloon tape with gold, white, and clear 10 to 12-inch balloons, then secured the tape to the wall using Command strips. To add dimension, I attached 5-inch balloons with glue dots, creating the look of bubbles rising from the bottle.
Number of balloons used for this stunning balloon garland
- 5 to 10 balloons in the 10 to 12-inch size
- About 10 5-inch white balloons
This garland turned out simple yet super impactful, perfect for adding a fun, celebratory touch to any party!

Lemon Themed Balloon Display on Single Tall Arch

For this lemon-themed birthday party balloon display, I used a balloon kit that included four different colors. To assemble the garland, I inflated all the balloons, twisted them into quads, and connected them using 260 balloons. Once the clusters were ready, I arranged them on the frame using clips to secure the display.
Number of balloons used for this stunning balloon garland
- 15 12-inch balloons in each color
- 15 5-inch balloons in each color
The kit also included 18-inch balloons, but since they took up too much space for the setup, we decided to leave them out. Even without them, the garland turned out bright, full, and perfect for the lemon-themed celebration!
