Let me show you how I took beads from Dollar Tree and turned them into this beautiful DIY Farmhouse Wooden Bead Garland!

A farmhouse wooden bead garland is like a piece of jewelry for your house. They add a rustic texture to any room and pair perfectly with the beloved farmhouse style. It’s safe to say I love this trend because I have a beaded garland in almost every room of our home. So, I knew I HAD to come up with a DIY version to help you save a few bucks. This garland cost me less than $2 to make, and I like it just as much (if not more) than my other garlands sprinkled throughout our home. I was super excited when I found the wooden beads at the good ol’ Dollar Tree! In this tutorial, I show you how to efficiently paint several beads at one time and finish your garland with a DIY twine tassel. You are going to love this one!
These garlands make for great gifts as well! Do you have a shower or housewarming coming up? I personally like pairing them up with a gift card for birthdays and other celebrations.
Do you need help decorating with your garland? My biggest tip is to keep it casual, but I go into further detail in step 6 at the end of this post. I include several photos of how I personally style our wooden bead garlands in hopes to inspire you with yours.
This post is all about how to make a farmhouse wooden bead garland with tassels!

Instructions for DIY Farmhouse Wooden Bead Garland
Step 1: Stringing the Beads for your Farmhouse Wooden Bead Garland

If you want to change the color of your beads the way I did, you will want to try this method I used to paint them. This method is efficient and way more fun than hand-painting each individual bead with a brush. Start by stringing several beads on a piece of floral wire. Be sure to allow enough space between each bead for drying. If the beads are touching while drying, they will be stuck together. You can use string for this step, but I find the beads don’t slip as much on the wire. Consider the size of the box you are using when determining the length of your floral wire or string (see step 3).
Step 2: Dipping the Beads in Paint

Pour the paint into a medium-sized dish. You can use any kind of craft paint for this. I used Dixie Belle’s Chalk Mineral paint for this project (color: drop cloth – it’s the perfect off-white in my opinion). Dip the String of beads into the dish of paint while holding onto both ends of the wire. Use a paintbrush to help cover all the beads with the paint. Lift string out of the bowl and allow excess paint to drip off for a few seconds.
Step 3: Drying the Beads

Cut slits on the opposite sides of an old cardboard box (thank you Amazon) using an Exacto knife. Slip each end of your strung beads (now dripping in paint) in the slits and tape the ends to the box. Using a toothpick or something similar, spread-out any beads that are touching. Let beads dry completely before removing them from the wire. To keep the beads from forming “bumps” from the paint dripping, rotate the beads every few hours or so using a toothpick. I let mine dry overnight and embraced the “bumps”. I personally think the bumps add character.
Step 4: Re-String the Beads

Once they are dry, remove the beads from the wire or string and restring them onto a clean piece of floral wire or twine. I used floral wire so I can control the shape of the garland when decorating. As you remove the beads, work the wire inside the hole of the beads to knock off any dried-up paint to make the hole of the bead bigger. A bigger hole will be easier to work with when you restring them. If your beads are different sizes like mine, you will want to consider stringing them in some kind of pattern.
Step 5: Adding Tassels to your Farmhouse Wooden Bead Garland

Now it’s time to make your tassels! I think this is the perfect way to complete your garland. Cut a piece of cardboard (or something sturdy- I used an old picture frame) two times the length of your finished tassel. Begin wrapping your twine around the piece of cardboard until you reach your desired fullness (remember, the tassel will be twice as full as the loop around cardboard).
Carefully slide the loop of twine off the cardboard and tie it in the middle using a separate piece of twine. Cut through both looped ends and adjust into tassel shape.
Wrap another piece of twine around the top of the tassel several times and knot it. Trim the knot, and disguise it by tucking it in.
Step 6: Decorating with your Farmhouse Wooden Bead Garland
When it comes to decorating with your farmhouse wooden bead garland, just keep it casual! Don’t overthink it! The garland will add an additional element of texture any where your drape it. The garland works well draped over a framed sign, glass vase, stack of books, or basket. It can also be added to your favorite wreath, planter, or dessert table at your next gathering. These trendy beads are super versatile, so don’t get overwhelmed. Just throw it over your favorite piece of décor and enjoy.
