Learn how to make a DIY race car balloon arch with McLaren-inspired colors, checkered balloons, and fun Formula 1 birthday party decorations.

If you’re planning a race car birthday party, a colorful balloon arch is such a fun way to bring the theme to life! Whether you’re celebrating a first birthday or throwing a party for a little racing fan, this DIY race car balloon arch is a great way to create a statement backdrop that doubles as the perfect spot for birthday pictures.
I had the opportunity to create this McLaren-inspired balloon backdrop for my friend’s daughter, Audrey, who was celebrating her first birthday. Her family is big into Formula 1 racing, especially Team McLaren, so a racing-themed birthday was the perfect fit! I loved getting to work with such bright, vibrant colors since so many of the balloon decorations I typically make for baby showers and bridal showers involve softer colors and neutrals. This was such a fun change, and I couldn’t wait to see everything come together.
If you’ve never made a balloon garland before, I have a balloon garland tutorial that walks you through the basics. For this post, I’m sharing how I created this particular backdrop, the supplies I used, and a few tips that made the process easier.
This post is all about race car balloon arch ideas!
Supplies for a Race Car Balloon Arch

For this backdrop, I used two white arched backdrop panels, latex balloons in orange, blue, black, and white, and a few racing-themed decorations. I also incorporated black-and-white checkered balloons and tire balloons to really bring the Formula 1 theme together.
Instead of purchasing a race car balloon garland kit, I ordered my balloon colors individually. I wanted to stick with two main colors, orange and blue, and use black and white to break everything up. I typically use Party Loop balloons because I’ve had really good luck with their quality, and they offer so many different colors to choose from.
Here’s what I used for this setup:
- Orange, blue, black, and white balloons
- Black-and-white checkered balloons
- Racing tire balloons
- 260 balloons and balloon clips
- Electric balloon pump
- Two arched backdrop stands and white covers
- Happy Birthday light-up sign
- Checkered racing pennant flags
You can find all the supplies here!!
If you’re ordering everything online, be sure to check the estimated delivery time so you have your supplies well before the party. I prefer to have everything ready ahead of time so I can focus on prepping the balloons instead of waiting on last-minute deliveries.
How I Made the Race Car Balloon Arch

Planning the Balloon Backdrop Design

Before I started assembling anything, I created a mockup to send to my friend so she could see what I had in mind. Since I was decorating for someone else, I wanted to make sure we were on the same page about the colors, arrangement, and overall look. She also showed me where the backdrop would be displayed, which is always helpful when planning a balloon setup.
I prefer setting up balloon arches in covered areas rather than outside in direct sunlight, especially when I’m making them for someone else’s event. Balloons tend to last longer when they’re protected from excessive heat and direct sun, so that’s something I always consider before agreeing on a location.
Creating the Color-Blocked Balloon Garland

For the actual balloon garlands, I used a color-blocking technique rather than mixing all the colors evenly throughout. I started by inflating my balloons, tying them into pairs, and twisting two pairs together to create quad clusters. Then, I connected two quads of the same color to create larger sections of orange, blue, black, and white.
I used 260 balloons to connect my clusters and added larger balloons wherever they made sense to give the garland more dimension. Once the main sections were assembled, I made a few smaller clusters using 5-inch balloons to fill in the gaps and make everything look fuller. I typically add at least two or three mini clusters throughout a section, depending on how much volume it needs.
If you’re unfamiliar with this method, my tutorial on how to stick balloons together explains how I create quad clusters and connect them using 260 balloons.
Attaching the Balloon Garland to the Arches

I attached the larger garland to the left side of the taller arch, allowing the balloons to extend across the top and down toward the floor. Then, I added a smaller arrangement to the right side of the second arch. I used clips to secure the clusters to the frames and continued adding balloons until I was happy with the overall shape.
I tend to go a little overboard with balloons, especially when I already have extras inflated! But you could absolutely recreate a similar race car balloon arch with fewer balloons. If you’re trying to decide how many to purchase, I have an entire post about how many balloons you need for a balloon garland that can help you plan.
Adding Formula 1 Racing Decorations

The balloons were definitely the main feature, but the smaller racing details are what really brought the entire backdrop together. I was especially excited to reuse some tire balloons and other decorations from my boys’ monster truck birthday party. Being able to recycle party supplies is always nice and since both themes involved racing, the tire balloons worked perfectly!
I also added black-and-white checkered pennant flags across the white backdrop panels. They were such a simple addition, but they helped tie the two balloon arrangements together and made the display feel more like a race car birthday party.
Another favorite detail was our Happy Birthday light-up sign. We originally purchased this sign for a family birthday celebration a few years ago, and I’ve used it for several parties since then. I love investing in decorations that can be reused for different occasions, and this sign really popped against the white arches and colorful balloons.
The finishing touches couldn’t have worked out any better. Audrey was gifted a little McLaren ride-on car for her birthday, which made the perfect addition to the backdrop. Her mom had also ordered a small racetrack decoration to place on the floor in front of the arches. Between the car, racetrack, checkered flags, and tire balloons, everything came together into such a fun photo backdrop.
Prepping and Transporting the Balloon Garland

One thing I’ve learned after making quite a few balloon arches is that doing as much prep work at home as possible makes setup day so much easier. I inflated and assembled the balloon clusters ahead of time, so once I arrived at the party, I could focus on attaching everything to the arches and making adjustments.
My favorite transportation trick is using large black trash bags to hold the balloon clusters. I can usually fit one large cluster of balloons into each bag, which keeps everything together and makes it easier to load and unload.
The only downside is making sure I have enough room in our vehicles to transport everything! With two car seats and all the other things we typically have in our vehicles, hauling a bunch of inflated balloons can get a little interesting.
Once I arrived, I attached the main balloon clusters to the backdrop stands using clips and 260 balloons, then added the smaller balloons and racing decorations. This is also why I like creating a mockup beforehand. It gives me a general idea of where everything should go, even though I usually make a few adjustments once I see the balloons in person.
Tips for Recreating This Race Car Balloon Arch

If you’re planning to make your own race car balloon arch, my biggest advice is to keep the color palette simple and focus on adding dimension with different balloon sizes. Even though this backdrop had several colors, orange and blue were the stars of the show, while black and white helped balance everything out.
You also don’t have to purchase every decoration brand new. Reusing the tire balloons and Happy Birthday sign saved me from buying additional supplies, and they worked just as well for this party as they did for previous celebrations.
If you’re working with a smaller budget or don’t want such a large balloon arrangement, you could easily use one arch instead of two, create a smaller garland, or purchase a race car balloon garland kit that already includes coordinating colors. The checkered accents and tire balloons will still make the theme recognizable without needing an enormous display.
And don’t feel like your balloon arch has to look exactly like someone else’s! I love using inspiration photos and mockups, but some of my favorite details happen when I’m actually putting everything together and deciding where the next cluster should go.
Final Thoughts on Race Car Balloon Arch Ideas

I absolutely loved how this McLaren-inspired race car balloon arch turned out! The bright orange and blue balloons were such a fun change from my usual color palettes, and all the little racing details made the backdrop feel extra special for Audrey’s first birthday.
Whether you’re planning a Formula 1 birthday party or just looking for race car birthday decorations, I hope this gives you some inspiration to create your own backdrop. You don’t need to use as many balloons as I did or purchase a bunch of expensive decorations to make something fun and memorable. Sometimes a few bright colors, a simple backdrop, and some creative details are all you need!
