Discover easy diy zen bathroom decor ideas to create a calm, spa-like bathroom with natural elements, soft textures and simple updates.

I have always said that bathrooms are one of the easiest rooms in your home to redecorate. They’re usually a smaller space, there are only so many things you need in there, and even a few simple changes, like updating your above toilet decor, can make the entire room feel different.
I also think the bathroom is a great place to take a few decorating risks. You might not be ready to cover your living room in a funky wallpaper or try something completely different throughout your main living space, but a bathroom? Go for it! It’s a smaller space and, if you get tired of it, it’s usually much easier to change.
But when it comes to my own bathroom, I tend to want it to feel calm. Your bathroom is where you get ready in the morning, wash your face at night, take a long shower and, if you’re lucky, actually get a few quiet minutes to unwind in the bathtub. Adding an extra layer of calm to that part of your day just makes sense.
That’s why I love DIY zen bathroom decor. And you don’t need a huge bathroom or an expensive renovation to create that spa-like feeling at home. Think soft whites and creams, warm woods, stone, greenery and other natural elements, cozy textiles, good lighting and just a few intentional decorative objects. The goal is simple: less clutter, more calm.
This post is all about DIY Zen Bathroom Decor.
How Do You Make a Bathroom Feel Zen?
Think about the last time you walked into a really nice spa. What made it feel different? It’s usually not one big thing. The lighting is soft, it smells good, the colors are calming and you see natural materials like wood, stone and greenery. Everything has a place, and there isn’t a ton of clutter competing for your attention.
That’s exactly what we’re trying to recreate at home. And you don’t have to completely change your decorating style to do it. Whether your home is traditional, modern, modern farmhouse or somewhere in between, you can take the parts of that spa-like style you love and make them work in your own bathroom.
Here are some of my favorite DIY zen bathroom decor ideas to get you started.
Add Natural Wood Shelves

Bathrooms don’t usually give us a ton of floor space, so use your walls! The empty wall above the toilet is one of my favorite places to add shelving. A couple of simple wood shelves add warmth while also giving you more storage and a place to decorate.
You can make your own with wood boards, stain and brackets, or give inexpensive premade shelves a more custom look. When it comes time to style them, don’t overdo it. Layer a small piece of artwork with a plant, candle, pretty jar or basket. Mix useful items with a few decorative objects so your shelves are pretty without becoming cluttered.

Make a Wooden Bathtub Tray

If you have a bathtub, a wooden bath tray is one of my favorite ways to immediately give it that spa-like look, and it can also be a really simple DIY.
Cut a piece of wood slightly wider than your tub, sand it smooth and finish it in a stain or color that works with the rest of your bathroom. Add a candle, bath salts, a book and maybe a little greenery when you want to unwind.
Just remember that water and electronics don’t mix, and any candles should always be kept safely away from anything flammable.
Create Pretty Bath Salt Jars

Why hide everything that’s actually pretty enough to become part of your decor? Pour bath salts or Epsom salts into glass jars and add a small wooden scoop. Group a few jars together on a shelf or your bathtub tray, and suddenly an everyday bathroom product looks intentional.
I especially love glass mixed with warm wood and natural textures for a zen bathroom.
Add Eucalyptus to Your Shower

This one requires almost no DIY skills, but it can make your shower feel a little more special. A bundle of fresh eucalyptus adds beautiful natural greenery and can bring another texture into an otherwise plain shower.
If maintaining real greenery isn’t realistic for you, you can get a similar visual effect with faux stems elsewhere in the bathroom.
Bring in More Greenery

Don’t stop at the shower. Plants are one of the easiest ways to bring natural elements into a bathroom. Add a small plant to your shelves, place one near the bathtub or use a larger plant to fill an awkward corner.
Just make sure you choose a plant that works with your bathroom’s humidity and amount of natural light. And if your bathroom doesn’t have a window, use faux greenery! There is absolutely nothing wrong with a good fake plant.
Make a Decorative Countertop Tray

If you have bottles scattered all over your bathroom counter, a tray can make a huge difference. Make a simple wooden tray, repurpose one you already own or give an inexpensive tray a little makeover.
Then group together the products you actually use every day, like hand soap, lotion or skincare. Add a candle or small vase if you have room. Grouping things together makes your counter look more intentional, even when those things are there because you actually need them.
Give Your Bathroom Vanity a Makeover

You don’t necessarily need a brand-new vanity to get a brand-new look. Paint can completely transform an outdated bathroom cabinet. Add new hardware, update the knobs or pulls and suddenly something you were ready to rip out may work perfectly in the room.
If you’re creating a zen bathroom, I’d look at soft neutrals, warm wood tones or earthy colors rather than choosing something that makes the space feel busier.

Frame Your Bathroom Mirror
Have a giant builder-grade bathroom mirror? Before you replace it, consider framing it. A simple wood frame adds warmth and can make a basic mirror feel much more finished.
You can also customize the frame to your decorating style. Natural wood can give you that warm spa feeling, while a chunkier rustic frame can work beautifully with modern farmhouse decor.
Make Simple, Calming Wall Art
Your bathroom wall art doesn’t have to be complicated. Frame a simple quote, a peaceful photograph, pressed greenery or an inexpensive printable.
If you’re going for a zen feel, I’d keep the colors and designs fairly simple. You want the room to feel peaceful, not like every wall is competing for your attention. That doesn’t mean it can’t have personality, though. Your bathroom is still a great place to have a little fun with artwork you might not use elsewhere in your home.

Use Woven Baskets to Hide Clutter

If there is one thing that can ruin my calm bathroom mood, it’s clutter everywhere. Baskets are your friend.
Use woven baskets to hold extra toilet paper, towels, washcloths, hair products or all those random bathroom necessities you don’t necessarily want on display. They hide the clutter while also bringing another natural texture into the room.
You can even make your own! I have an easy woven basket DIY that is perfect for adding a little texture and storage without spending a ton. If you have open shelves, baskets are especially helpful for keeping everything from looking too busy.
Create a Candle or Diffuser Station
Part of creating a spa-like bathroom is thinking beyond what the room looks like. Think about what it smells like, too.
Create a small area for a candle, reed diffuser or essential oil diffuser. Choose a scent that feels clean and relaxing to you instead of mixing several different fragrances throughout the room. This is also an easy area to update seasonally without changing the entire bathroom.
I’ll link some of my favorite bathroom finds throughout the post, so it’s worth checking for any current special offers if you’re trying to recreate the look on a budget.
Add Soft Textures

Bathrooms naturally have a lot of hard surfaces. Tile, countertops, mirrors, glass and fixtures can make the room feel a little cold, so balance them with softer materials.
A plush bath mat, fluffy towels and even a soft shower curtain can make a surprisingly big difference. Stick with whites, creams and warm neutrals if you want a traditional spa look, or choose whatever colors make you feel relaxed.
Make the Lighting Softer
There is a time and place for bright bathroom lighting. I definitely want to see what I’m doing when I’m putting on makeup, but I don’t necessarily want that same bright overhead light when I’m trying to take a bath at night.
If you have room, a small lamp on the counter can be really pretty. You could also install dimmable lighting or simply use a candle when you’re winding down. If you’re up for a slightly bigger DIY, replacing an outdated bathroom light fixture can completely change the room.
Good lighting is one of those little details that makes a space feel more expensive than it actually is.
Bring in Stone and Other Natural Materials

Wood isn’t the only material that can help create that zen feeling. Look for simple ways to bring in stone, ceramic, glass, bamboo and woven materials.
A stone soap dish, ceramic vase, wooden tray or woven basket might seem like a tiny change on its own, but layering those materials throughout the room makes the entire space feel warmer and more intentional. You don’t need a lot. In fact, I think less is more here.
Give Everything a Home

This may not be the most exciting DIY zen bathroom decor idea, but it might be the most important: give everything a home.
Hair tools need a spot. Skincare needs a spot. Towels need a spot. Extra toilet paper needs a spot. Add drawer organizers, baskets, trays, hooks or containers wherever you need them.
You can have the prettiest bathroom in the world, but if every counter is covered with stuff, it’s probably not going to feel very relaxing. Before you buy more decor, declutter what you already have and figure out where everything belongs. You might be surprised by how much better the room feels without adding anything at all.
f the space above your toilet is going unused, I also rounded up some of my favorite over the toilet storage ideas that make use of that vertical space without adding more clutter to the bathroom: over the toilet storage ideas
Don’t Forget the Little Details
Creating a zen bathroom isn’t about making your home look like an actual spa. It’s about figuring out which parts of that experience make you feel relaxed and bringing a little bit of that feeling home.
Maybe it’s wrapping yourself in a really soft towel after a shower. Maybe it’s turning off the overhead light and lighting a candle while you take a bath. Maybe it’s finally opening your bathroom cabinet without 14 bottles falling out. Those little things matter.
And I think that’s why bathrooms are one of my favorite spaces to redecorate. You can make a noticeable difference without taking on a huge project. Start with the clutter. Bring in some natural materials. Add greenery. Soften the lighting. Make sure everything has a spot. Then add a few decorative objects that make the space feel like you.
Your bathroom may not be the main focal point of your home, but you use it every single day. You might as well make it a place that brings a little extra calm to your day.
