Let me help you out this Mother’s Day with this compiled list of DIY Mother’s Day gifts Moms actually want.

Can we please stop giving our Mom’s crappy gifts?!? No more coupon books for free hugs! I’m not saying DIY gifts are out of the question, but we need to put the lame coupon books to bed! Moms do everything for us and then some, so I think it’s time we start giving them something they actually want for Mother’s Day. As I said, a DIY gift is not out of the question, but I think we could step it up for all those wonderful moms out there!
We can all agree that Mom deserves an expensive daylong trip to the spa, but maybe that’s out of your price range, or maybe it’s not and you want to add something more personable to go with it. I am here to help! I have compiled a list of DIY Mother’s Day gifts moms actually want and linked them to my easy-to-follow tutorials.

DIY Wreath

I love gifting wreaths because they are not a permanent decoration, and there is always a place for them (even if it’s for a specific holiday). At the risk of sounding ungrateful, I have been gifted lots of home decor items that don’t go with my home aesthetic, or I don’t have room for. I feel guilty knowing I have a tote full of things I will never use sitting in my basement. However, I can always do something with a wreath.
A wreath instantly warms up space, whether it be for the front porch, pantry, near the fireplace, a window, or the base of a centerpiece. So, why not give one as a gift? Make the gift even more special and DIY! Wreaths are super simple and don’t have to cost much either. Check out some of my ideas below.

Book Stacks

Personalized book stacks are a great way to personalize your space, so why not give the gift of personalization?! No matter what season of life Mom is in, book stacks are the perfect way to celebrate her! A new mom would enjoy a stack personalized with their new baby’s name and birth info, or how about listing the grandkids’ names for your beloved Grandmother? These charming stacks are cheap and easy to make too!

Mud Painted Vase

Most Moms despise mud and they should! However, I think they would love the end result of this mud painting technique! Can you believe I used actual mud to transform this planter for my tree?! Actual mud!? Check out the link below to see the before. I encourage you to get the kiddos involved with this DIY gift idea. Playing in the mud brought me back to my childhood in the best way. Giving the gift of mud may sound super weird, but hear me out! Mud painting is such a fun way to transform any décor such as a planter, vase, tray, or decorative bowl.

Wood Bead Garland

These garlands make great gifts! I like to pair them with a gift card or add them to a gift basket. If the mom in your life enjoys the farmhouse look, she is guaranteed to like this DIY version. This farmhouse accessory is like a piece of jewelry for your house. Wood bead garlands add a rustic texture to any room and pair perfectly with the beloved farmhouse style. It’s safe to say I love this trend because I have a beaded garland in almost every room of our home. This garland cost me less than $2 to make, and I like it just as much (if not more) than my other garlands sprinkled throughout our home. In this tutorial, I also explain how to make the twine tassel too.

Salt Dough Ring Dish

Does Mom have a place to stash her special rings or jewelry? If not, why not make her one using only three ingredients! These salt dough ring dishes are so easy to make! Have the kiddos help decorate the dish for Grandma/Mom to cherish forever. I wear my wedding ring 99% of the time, but I didn’t have a safe place to set it when I take it off to shower, moisturize or apply product to my hair. One of my worst fears is to lose my wedding ring! I would be absolutely crushed and heartbroken. Not to mention how upset it would make Alex. So, to avoid heartache, I whipped up some salt dough! It’s the same recipe I used to make my salt dough ornaments, and just as easy and fun to make.

Lazy Susan

Is Mom a Marie Kondo fan? How about The Home Edit? If so, she would love the genius invention that is a lazy susan! Especially if you take it a step further, and customize it with jute rope like I did. Don’t worry, I have a tutorial. Mom will want one in every room. They have great functionality by allowing you to use corners effectively and keep spaces tidy.

Cement Planter

I can’t wait to make a few more of these for my summer plants this year! Is the Mom in your life a plant lover? I know I have several (mostly fake). Why not make her a customized cement planter and fill it with a plant from your local nursery? Planters can be pricey, so why not make your own!? Not only is the material cheap, but a mold can be created out of virtually any material found at home. Don’t want to make your own mold? Amazon has lots of premade silicone ones like the one I used (click here). Anyone with a green thumb will love the personal touch of this inexpensive DIY. I made several this past summer and had so much fun with them! Now if only I was better at keeping the plants alive.

Personalized Sign + Lettering

How about a small personalized sign for Mom’s office or home? A reversed canvas is a fun and easy way to personalize your space! Like the wood bead garlands mentioned above, I have one in every room of our house. A reversed canvas makes for a great gift too! I usually fill my frames with canvas or large photos, but recently discovered this awesome shiplap version! If you’re not super thrilled with your lettering, I have a tutorial for that too!
